The Black Box Performance Project is an immersive experience where student actors take part in the entire creation of the play by doing extensive character analysis, scene study, costume and set design, light and sound design, and production tasks. The goal of the program is to fully educate the actor in the theatrical process.

This powerful story has been described as a “parable of the inner battle every man must fight.” It centers on Henry Fleming, a young Union soldier who battles his inner demons as he runs from and eventually faces his greatest fears. Published in 1895, TRBOC is considered the first great war novel but with surprising anti-war overtones. Crane’s story has resonated with readers over 2 centuries—the book itself has never gone out of print since first published. Catherine Bush’s adaptation takes it to the next level for audiences to experience Henry’s inspiring story LIVE onstage.

boots on the ground theater, the Hamptons-based theater company founded by Bonnie Grice, in association with the Southampton Cultural Center, presents The Miracle Worker by William Gibson, a play based on the extraordinary biography of Helen Keller, a young girl who at 19-months contracted a fever that left her deaf, blind, and mute. Unable to manage Helen’s violent outbreaks of frustration, her parents try hiring a teacher, Annie Sullivan, who is herself half-blind. Firm and resolute in the belief that Helen can be educated, Annie is relentless in her drive to create a bond that will ultimately free the child to communicate and grow to become an advocate for others with no voice.

“As a child, I saw the movie featuring Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft and was haunted by their story,” says producer Bonnie Grice. “Later I had the honor of interviewing Bancroft who confided that the role of Annie Sullivan was her favorite and, I knew at that moment, I had to bring the play to life.”

Ms. Grice has personally researched and sourced the production’s vintage costumes and has even hand-made several pieces. Directed by Joan Lyons (Crimes of the Heart) the play runs 70 minutes with no intermission on Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28 at 7pm with a matinee on Sunday, April 29 at 2pm in the Southampton Cultural Center. There are three weekday performances which are specially designated for Southampton Elementary and Middle Schools.

10-year-old Emma Suhr plays Helen Keller with Tina Marie Realmuto, an MFA Acting graduate from the Actors Studio Drama School, as Annie Sullivan. The cast also includes Daniel Becker (Captain Keller), Deyo Trowbridge (James), Gerri Wilson (Aunt Ev), Josephine Wallace (Viney) and Ms. Grice (Katie).
