Center Stage at Southampton Cultural Center to Hold Open Auditions for Disney’s The Little Mermaid

Center Stage at Southampton Cultural Center will hold open auditions for staged concert performances of Disney’s The Little Mermaid on Sunday, August 11th at 12:00pm, and Monday, August 12th at 6:00 PM, in the Southampton Cultural Center’s Levitas Center for the Arts.

Auditions will begin promptly at these times. Late arrivals will be seen at the discretion of the director. Vocal and dance audition required. Readings from the script will also occur.

Performances begin on October 11, 2019 and run through October 27, 2019.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages…Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with irresistible songs like “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” and “Part of Your World.”

Roles in The Little Mermaid include:

ARIEL – (Female, 16 – 20s) A mermaid, and King Triton’s youngest daughter. She is a dreamer with an adventurous spirit, who dreams about life on land. Big hearted, rebellious, and curious. Strong Singer.

PRINCE ERIC – (Male, 16 – 20s) A human monarch who captures Ariel’s heart. He feels most alive on the sea, and yearns for adventure! Charming, sensitive, and doesn’t want to settle. Strong Singer.

URSULA – (Male or Female, 30s – 50s) The tentacled and manipulative sea witch, and King Triton’s sister. Cunning, calculating, and ambitious, she will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Larger than life. Strong Singer.

FLOUNDER – (Male or Female, 8 – teens) A faithful, enthusiastic fish who is Ariel’s sweet and sincere best friend. He is spunky, can be anxious, and rarely leaves her side. Strong or Character Singer.

SEBASTIAN – (Male, 20s – 40s) A meticulous, uptight crab who is the choirmaster in King Triton’s court. Ever anxious and with a flair for the dramatic, he becomes Ariel’s protector both above and below the sea. Caribbean accent. Character Singer.

SCUTTLE – (Male or Female, 20s – 40s) A know-it-all seagull who serves as Ariel’s expert on all things human! Zany and offbeat, Scuttle’s eccentricities are more endearing than aggravating. Loud-mouthed and optimistic. Character Singer.

GRIMSBY – (Male or Female, 40s – 60s) Prince Eric’s prim and proper valet who tries to guide him towards the throne and a suitable bride. While he has a stern and rigid demeanor, he is also truly fond of Eric, and worries about him as if he were his son. Character Singer.

KING TRITON – (Male, 40s – 60s) The King of the Sea and a single father to seven girls. While he struggles to balance his political and paternal powers, he would do anything for his daughters and wants to protect them. Has an imposing presence and commanding nature. Strong Singer.

FLOTSAM AND JETSOM – (Male or Female, Any Age) Electric eels and Ursula’s sinister lackeys. Devious, charming, and manipulative, they are always lurking about. Character Singing.

MERSISTERS – (Female, Various ages) King Triton’s other 6 daughters, and Ariel’s sisters. Full of personality and sass. Strong Singers.

CHEF LOUIS – (Male or Female, 30s – 50s) The melodramatic head chef of the

palace! A culinary perfectionist with an affinity for knives. Highly comedic with exaggerated movement, and an over- the top French accent. Character Singer.

PILOT – (Male or Female, 30s – 50s) The helmsman of Prince Eric’s ship. A nautical expert who entertains the sailors with wild tales of the sea! Character Singer.

PRINCESSES – (Female, Various Ages) Suitors who try everything they can to win Prince Eric’s heart! They have exaggerated and comedic personalities that are revealed through song, and are not the strongest singers in the world. Character singing.

ENSEMBLE – (Male and Female, Various Ages) The sea creatures, sailors, maids, gulls, chefs, and other featured characters who make up the world above and below the sea. Strong Singers.

Those auditioning should prepare a 16-32 measure cut of a Disney song or Broadway standard, bring suitable clothing and shoes for a dance audition, and a flexible schedule. Most rehearsals are scheduled Mondays through Fridays in the evening, with weekend rehearsals as needed and planned. Please note that not everyone will be called for every rehearsal.

Full rehearsals begin Friday, August 16^th.
